Several points along the lagoon dyke east, west and south of Zingst provide a good view of the cranes. You will find wooden huts or viewing platforms specially built for this purpose. Experience the birds when taking their sleeping places in the evening hours and look straight at the island of Kirr, located in the lagoon. Cranes rest on its shores. What visitors benefit from the observation points is the possibility of watching the birds flying in and out in the morning and evening hours regardless of waterlevels.
The Pramort hut requires a special restraint for watching cranes since it lies in the proximity to a most sensitive crane habitat – to the mudflats and the Werder islands. As long as the birds are flying in it is absolutely necessary to stay in the shelter of the hut. The observation should be done in silence. Pramort lies in the approach path.
How to get there: Visitors can either walk or go by bicycle. Additionally hoarse-drawn carriages can be arranged.
Please note: do without gaudy clothing
Near Groß Mohrdorf a German facility for crane protection is the observation hut Bisdorf. The flood of visitors arriving at this observation point is often very large. The hut offers ideal opportunities for watching cranes, because the birds actually fly over in droves to their main resting place in and around the mudflats of Bock. Not only in the evenings but also in the mornings when the cranes leave their sleeping places for the search of food such a natural wonder will very often become visible. You can hear the birds’ unmistakable cries from afar. Those birds that choose their sleeping places at the lagoon side of the island Großer Werder can be seen well from the hut in Bisdorf, too.
At the lake Guenzer See as well as in the village of Hohendorf you can watch cranes even in the daytime while taking in their food. Visiting this village you will enter a building billed as the “crane outlook”, once a barn for storing potatoes. The makeover of the building was possible with the help of the “Association for the protection and preservation of the cranes’ resting area in the Ruegen/Bock region”.
Cranes are usually attracted with corn or grain to a spot close to the outlook. This so called “distracted feeding” is not just for observation. It also helps the farmers to keep their surrounding fields to a certain extent from damage. Due to the closeness the birds can be photographed from this observation point quite well. With some luck visitors are able to see scenes from the family life of the birds in autumn.
There is a platform for observing cranes exactly at the shore of the lagoon at Zarrenzin. They experience the birds while flying over to the mudflats of Bock or coming from that direction.
Furthermore on the fields to the right and left of the road between Stralsund and Barth, cranes are frequently observed. But please, do not leave the car. A crane does not see a danger in a car but in a man.
